Do You Need LTC Insurance

Review this quiz to determine whether you should look further to determine if a Long-Term Care policy is right for you.

Question Alvin, if I needed long term care today, how would it affect my family?
Al's Reply It depends. Would your family be able to care for you at home and assist you with normal activities of daily living as needed such as bathing, cooking, cleaning, moving about, etc?

Question I have friends who would come and assist me. Do I really need Long-Term Care insurance?
Al's Reply Again, it depends upon your situation. Can you depend on others? Would you want to depend on others?

Question Suppose I needed 24-hour care?
Al's Reply There are a number of issues to consider here. For instance, would you be able to stay at home or would you require nursing home care?

Question Would I be able to pay for this care?
Al's Reply In Eastern Pennsylvania, average nursing home care costs $48,000 to $55,000 per year. The National average is $40,000.

Question Suppose I needed 3 years of care?
Al's Reply Three years of nursing home care would total approximately $120,000 (Remember, that's the National average, Pennsylvania is higher.) Could you meet these costs out of your savings and assets?

Question Will I be able to protect my assets and savings?
Al's Reply

As you probably have noted, Long-Term Care can be very costly. Without adequate Long-Term Care insurance, many individuals may need to draw upon savings for expenses.

Things to consider:

  • Leaving my estate to my heirs
  • Avoiding welfare (Medicaid)
  • Preserving my independence and dignity
  • Being dependent on my children
  • Choice of care and settings

If you have any concerns with any of the questions or statements above, you may want to pursue Long Term Care Insurance further.
